The 139th edition of the International Labour Day, celebrated under the theme “Social Dialogue and Decent Work for a Peaceful Cameroon,” was marked with pomp and unity on May 1, 2025, across the national territory. In Fako Division, Manga Williams Avenue in Limbe played host to thousands of workers drawn from various companies, institutions, and organizations who came together to celebrate the spirit of labour and reaffirm their dedication to nation-building. Among the many participants, the Biaka Group stood tall, both in presence and performance.
The ceremony officially began with the long-awaited awarding of Labour Medals of Honour to workers who have demonstrated excellence, loyalty, and dedication in their fields over the years. There was excitement and anticipation as names were called and medals were pinned. The Biaka Group, which comprises Biaka University Institute of Buea, Biaka Hospital, and the Biaka Foundation, recorded a moment of pride and distinction by clinching a total of 24 medals: 18 silver medals, 5 silver gilt, and 1 prestigious gold medal. Each medal bore witness to years of selfless service, discipline, and devotion from the recipients.
As the medals sparkled under the forenoon sun, the atmosphere shifted to a moment of reflection and motivation with speeches from various syndicate heads. These speeches echoed the central theme of the celebration, calling for stronger collaboration between workers and employers to foster peace and productivity. The speakers emphasized the need for continuous dialogue, fair working conditions, and mutual respect in all professional settings to ensure long-term development and peace in the country.
Then came the most vibrant part of the morning, the grand march pass. With cheers and rhythmic music, syndicates, public and private companies, academic institutions, youth groups, cultural associations, and even traditional dance groups all paraded in their colourful uniforms, proudly showcasing their identities and contributions to the nation’s workforce. The Biaka Group, donned in strikingly coordinated outfits, paraded with pride, bold “BIAKA” banners and signboards representing health, education, and community development. The Biaka trademark, with a blend of professionalism and unity did not go unnoticed, earning them admiration from both spectators and fellow marchers.
After the official event, the Biaka Group returned to their headquarters at the Biaka Complex for an in-house celebration designed to further commemorate the day in a more relaxed and reflective atmosphere. The internal celebration opened with a word of prayer led by Dr. Ngong, Director of the School of Education, inviting divine blessings upon the workers and the institution.
Next came a heartfelt welcome address from the Staff Delegate Representative, Mr. Fotabe Elvis, who did not shy away from expressing the collective thoughts, joys, concerns, and needs of the Biaka staff. His speech touched on key issues affecting staff welfare, including working conditions, professional growth, and general staff motivation. He praised the tireless efforts of the workforce and used the opportunity to formally table some of the pressing needs that could further enhance productivity and satisfaction among employees.
In response, the Board Chair of the Biaka Group, Dr. Francisca Biaka, delivered a warm and reassuring speech in which she extended sincere gratitude to the entire staff body for their unwavering dedication to the mission of the Biaka Group. She proudly declared that “Biaka staff are the best” and acknowledged that the institution’s continued growth and success would not be possible without the hard work and resilience of its personnel. Dr. Biaka went further to address the concerns raised by the staff delegate, promising that management would look into the demands and ensure that necessary actions are taken to meet the legitimate needs of the staff.
Following her speech, the momentous occasion continued with a photo session involving the medal laureates and the Board Chair, marking a symbolic gesture of recognition and gratitude for the years of service and sacrifice put in by these outstanding individuals. The photo session was with all smiles and shakes, capturing the spirit of appreciation that defined the day.
As the formalities concluded, the real party began. The celebration area came alive with live music, heavy refreshments, and interactive games. Staff members were seen singing, dancing, and participating in fun challenges where winners walked away with exciting prizes. There was laughter, camaraderie, and joy as both senior and junior staff let loose in celebration of their collective achievements.
The day drew to a memorable close with more entertainment and dance, thanks to the combined efforts of the Staff Delegates and the Top Administration of the Biaka Group. Their coordination and dedication ensured that the event was not only successful but also deeply meaningful. The sense of belonging and unity shared among staff members was evident, highlighting that beyond the duties and responsibilities, the Biaka Group remains a family grounded in purpose, service, and mutual support.
