In an inspiring celebration that captured the spirit of commitment, care, and community, the Department of Nursing at the Biaka University Institute of Buea (BUIB), in collaboration with Biaka Hospital, joined the rest of the world on May 10, 2025 to commemorate International Nurses Day (12 May globally) under the theme: “Our Nurses, Our Future – Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.”
The day-long celebration was packed with excitement, learning, reflection, and fun, beginning early in the morning with a vibrant march parade. Nursing students and hospital staff marched through two major fronts of the town of Buea; from congelcam and Malingo Junction to converge at the university campus. Dressed in their white Biaka T-shirts, holding banners and blowing vuvuzelas, the participants chanted heartfelt slogans that reflected both pride and purpose: “Nurses are great, nurses are caring!”, “We are specially ordained for this vocation!”, and “I’m proud to be a nurse!” Passersby and onlookers stopped to admire the colorful procession, many capturing photos and videos as a show of support for the nurses and the noble profession they represent.
The energy of the parade seamlessly transitioned into the formal ceremony upon arrival at the Biaka University campus. The ceremony began with an opening prayer, calling for divine guidance and blessings upon all nurses. This was followed by the singing of the Cameroon National Anthem and the stirring rendition of the Nurses Anthem, which echoed through the setting as students and professionals stood tall, symbolizing unity, resilience, and devotion to care.
Delivering the opening address on behalf of the university’s top administration, Mr. Nemkul Samuel, Director of Academic Affairs, commended the Department of Nursing and Biaka Hospital for organizing such a meaningful event. He emphasized the vital role nurses play not only within the walls of hospitals but in the broader context of public health and national development. “By investing in the well-being and training of nurses, we are directly strengthening our healthcare system and building a healthier economy,” he stated.
The Head of the Department of Nursing, Madam Sally Ekoli Eko, delivered a warm welcome address, appreciating the administration, speakers, and student body for their involvement. She highlighted how the theme of the celebration resonates deeply with the current global healthcare realities and encouraged the students to uphold the values of compassion, professionalism, and excellence. “Nursing is not just a job, it’s a calling. A society that empowers its nurses empowers its people,” she declared.
The celebration featured a series of academic and professional talks designed to educate and empower both aspiring and practicing nurses. The first discourse was presented by Madam Ukum Susan, who spoke on “Overcoming Burnout via Self of the Nurse.” In her talk, she addressed the growing incidence of mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion among healthcare workers, especially nurses who often work long shifts under intense pressure. She encouraged nurses to prioritize self-care, maintain work-life balance, and build strong support networks to help them cope with the demands of the profession.
Next came another insightful presentation by Madam Chung Clementine on “The Impact of Nurses on Economic Strength.” She skillfully connected healthcare delivery with economic growth, explaining how a well-supported nursing workforce leads to improved patient outcomes, reduced hospital stays, and a healthier, more productive population. “When nurses are given the tools and respect they deserve, the ripple effects touch every aspect of society, including our economy,” she asserted.
The academic segment was followed by an engaging entertainment session where students showcased their creative sides in a variety of talent presentations. There were electrifying dance performances, moving songs and poems that highlighted the dignity of nursing, and a well-scripted drama that illustrated the day-to-day challenges and triumphs of nurses in both rural and urban settings. A particularly humorous play-up was the eating competition, which left the audience in fits of laughter and applause. The segment not only provided entertainment but also fostered a sense of community and relaxation among participants.
The celebration resumed with a focused professional engagement, as Madam Palle Elizabeth, Director of the Cheryl-Ann Portwood Simulation Laboratory in BUIB, a respected nurse executive and representative of the Cameroon Nursing Association, took the stage to discuss “The Relevance of the Nursing Association in the 21st Century.” She spoke about the association’s role in advocating for nurses’ rights, providing continuing education, and ensuring professional accountability. Her talk inspired many students to consider joining the association as a means of professional networking, growth, and collective empowerment.
The final professional talk of the day came from Mr. Timah, who delivered an uplifting address on “Opportunities for Nurses.” He explored the diverse career paths available to modern nurses, ranging from clinical specialization and academic teaching to leadership, research, and international opportunities. He encouraged the students to dream big and remain committed to lifelong learning, reminding them that the world needs more visionary and compassionate nurse leaders.
As the program drew to a close at the beautiful BUIB campus, Madam Sally Ekoli Eko returned to offer the closing remarks. In her heartfelt speech, she thanked all the organizers, guest speakers, and participants who made the day a success. She reiterated the importance of the celebration’s theme and called on policymakers, institutions, and communities to continuously support nurses in their professional journeys. “Nurses are not just the backbone of healthcare; they are catalysts of change. When we care for them, we care for the future of our society and our economy,”
The 2025 International Nurses Day celebration at BUIB was not only a moment of joy and camaraderie but also a call to action, a reminder that nurses deserve recognition, support, and investment. Through lectures, performances, and shared experiences, the event left a lasting impression on all attendees and reignited a collective commitment to upholding the values of nursing: care, compassion, courage, and competence.
